The wine sector is an asset for the EU, as it represents millions of jobs, agricultural traditions and is a cornerstone of the EU culture.
The use of agro-chemical products (pesticides, herbicides, etc.) has been used in agricultural activities for centuries to prevent crop diseases and pests, and consequently improve crop development and farm profitability. However, such products are associated with harmful effects on the environment and human and other living beings’ health.
Together with UNINOVA we are developing an AI-based solution (GrAIpe) that will help improve the efficiency and accuracy of the treatment of various crop diseases and pests in vineyards. The experiment takes place between September 2022 and June 2023.
GrAIpe aims to help wine producers make more rational decisions regarding the treatment of pests in vineyards and plan better their agricultural activities while promoting rural food security, saving costs and protecting human health.
GrAIpe’s experiment will take place at Quinta do Escudial , a boutique wine producer with a vineyard of 7 acres (composed of mainly local grapes – 70% reds / 30% whites) located in Seia, part of the Dão Region (the oldest demarcated region for non-spirited wines in Portugal). Presently, in like many boutique wine makers, the vineyard’s monitoring and treatment is carried out manually and solely by direct observation on the field.
